The high-profile wedding of US-based industrialist Raju Ramalinga Mantena’s daughter Netra Mantena and Vamsi Gadiraju is currently underway in Udaipur. The wedding festivities saw several international celebrities and Bollywood stars, including Ranveer Singh, in attendance. Ranveer even performed on the stage and made other guests dance to his songs at the ceremony.
Ranveer made Donald Trump Jr. and his girlfriend Bettina Anderson dance to his popular song “What Jhumka?” from his 2023 hit family comedy, Karan Johar’s Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani. He also made the other guests dance to his memorable track “Aankh Maarey” from his 2018 hit cop drama, Rohit Shetty’s Simmba. Ranveer showed off his rapping skills, too, by crooning the popular number “Apna Time Aayega” from his 2019 hit coming-of-age musical, Zoya Akhtar’s Gully Boy.
As videos of Ranveer Singh and other Bollywood celebrities dancing at the Udaipur wedding went viral over the weekend, a clip from an Ranbir Kapoor interview curiously resurfaced on the internet. In the 2011 interview with Times Now, Ranbir shared that he would never dance at weddings for money, and that he considers it beneath his dignity to do so.
“I wouldn’t do it because of the family I come from. Having said that, I’m not against the people who do it. But it’s not the values I’ve been brought up with,” said Ranbir. He is the great grandson of theatre stalwart and actor Prithviraj Kapoor, the grandson of legendary actor-filmmaker Raj Kapoor and the son of yesteryear actors Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Kapoor.
When asked if there’s anything wrong with dancing at weddings for money, which actors like Shah Rukh Khan have also defended in the past, Ranbir added, “There’s nothing wrong. But money is not my drive. I don’t want to earn billions and billions. I’m an actor. My drive is different. My passions are different. I don’t want to lose my dignity in my eyes dancing at a wedding, with people standing with a glass of alcohol and there could be snide comments. I wouldn’t want any of my family members to do it. It’s a personal choice. I wouldn’t do it.”
When asked if Ranbir would compromise his stardom by not dancing at weddings for money, he argued, “I wouldn’t lose stardom, but I wouldn’t allow my stardom to make myself think that if I’m a star, I can do anything and get away with it.”
Ranbir Kapoor was seen dancing to songs like “Chaiyya Chaiyya” and “Tauba Tauba” alongside Shah Rukh Khan and other actors at Anant Ambani’s wedding in Mumbai last year.
