It wouldn’t be incorrect to say that the new wave of Malayalam cinema has introduced India to a new kind of storytelling with its protagonists breaking away from tradition. This year has already seen Mammootty‘s outstanding performance in Bramayugam and films like Manjummel Boys, and Premalu, further proving that the audience loves the unconventional. Adding to this impressive lineup, Prithviraj Sukumaran and Blessy recently delivered Aadujeevitham – The Goat Life, a gripping survival drama that has garnered significant attention. However, even in Malayalam cinema, this wasn’t the case earlier as, like all other industries, actors were advised to follow a system to ensure the success of their films. During the 2022 Film Companion roundtable discussion, Malayalam star Dulquer Salmaan said, “People who know industry trends would say, ‘Don’t do it. It’s a bad idea, a bad role, a bad film. Nobody is doing it.’ But I would go like, ‘I want to do it’.” The actor is gearing up for his upcoming film Lucky Baskhar which is directed by Venky Atluri.
Dulquer, who is known for his work in films like Sita Ramam, Charlie, King of Kotha and Kurup, emphasised that actors must not follow a formula or choose the conventional path which will guarantee success as far as selecting a film is concerned. “I don’t think any of us should approach a film from a perspective of if it will do well or not; because nobody has an idea what is going to work and what won’t,” he added.
Varun Dhawan, who was also present during the discussion, alongside Rishab Shetty, Anil Kapoor, Vidya Balan, Janhvi Kapoor, Ayushmann Khurrana, Vijay Varma, Sheeba Chadha and Rajkummar Rao, said there is a disconnect between filmmakers and the movie-going audience in Bollywood.
“During my interactions with people from various strata of society, I found out that we only chased the two (out of 10 people) who could buy tickets worth Rs 500. We ignored the other eight who could afford tickets priced at Rs 100. You can make a great film with those eight people,” said Varun. Citing the example of his film Jugjugg Jeeyo he added that the family entertainer did extraordinarily well in high-end multiplexes but makers couldn’t get people to the single screen. “I want to make films that appeal to everyone,” added.
Furthermore, during the discussion, Dulquer, referring to the massive success of Shah Rukh Khan-starrer Pathaan, added, “We can never write off stars as a system. We want to see them win and we don’t to see their films do bad (sic).”
Varun, who expressed his thoughts on stars ageing and the introduction of changing the entertainment industry, said, “I mean, it’s a b**wjob to everyone’s ego that you know that you’re a star, you’re this, and you’re that. But eventually, when people are watching the cinema, they just want to be entertained. That’s it.”
The video which went viral amused everyone as netizens couldn’t get over Janhvi’s hilarious reaction to Varun’s comment. “Hahaha did he mean “a blow to everyone’s ego?” wrote a social media user while another commented, “Did he actually say what i think i heard.”
