At one point, the Ram Gopal Varma school was a prominent catalyst for Indian cinema, consistently producing exceptional talents. One of the most influential Indian filmmakers of all time, RGV has made a remarkable contribution to the film industry and his extensive body of work includes notable films such as Raat, Rangeela, Kaun, Satya, Company, Sarkar, and Rakta Charitra.
At the same time, his collaboration with music director-turned-filmmaker Vishal Bhardwaj in the 1998 classic Satya also captured audiences’ affection.
Meanwhile, Vishal recently opened up about RGV and his equation with the veteran filmmaker. “RGV has a very scary sense of humour. It’s very sharp. Ramu is very clear about what he wants from his life, films and relationships,” Vishal said during an unfiltered chat with Samdish.
Dubbing this as his spirituality, Vishal pointed out that RGV “was” a fantastic filmmaker. “I think, of late, his films are not good,” he observed.
Recalling their collaboration, Vishal recounted: “(He came up to me and said) ‘My film has a lot of bloodshed and violence. Can you soften it with your melodies?’ That’s how it started. Slowly we discovered the music of the film.”
Sharing a hilarious anecdote involving Anurag Kashyap, who was one of the co-writers of Satya, and RGV, Vishal said: “Anurag used to say anything. He couldn’t keep things inside and would answer without any filter. This has happened twice or thrice. We were sitting and discussing something and suddenly, Anurag would say that he didn’t think this was right and would explain how it has to be. Hearing this, Ramu would look at him and prostrate on the floor. It was fun to watch. That circle exuded a different vibrancy.”
Starring Urmila Matondkar, JD Chakravarthy, Manoj Bajpayee and Paresh Rawal in key roles, Satya emerged as a monumental film in the annals of Bollywood, garnering massive success upon its release.
