A look at actor Vikrant Massey’s family feels like one is catching a glimpse of a cross-section of the ideal Indian society, marked by plurality and secularism. While his father follows Christianity, his mother practises Sikhism and his wife, actor Sheetal Thakur, is a Hindu. Vikrant’s brother Moeen, at the same time, chose to convert to Islam when he was just 17.

Recently, however, the 12th Fail actor encountered a wave of online trolling after photos of him touching Sheetal’s feet during Karwa Chauth went viral. While he was applauded by some, the actor also faced criticism and backlash from certain netizens. Speaking out about the incident and the broader topic of religious beliefs, Vikrant highlighted that he and his family embrace all faiths with respect. “My mother was born a Sikhni. But she was standing there wearing a bindi. We have been taught to go to temples since childhood. On the occasion of Navratri, Mata Rani’s pandals were set up under my house. So, it’s a very normal thing,” he said during a chat with Shubhankar Mishra on his YouTube channel.

“My father has been to Vaishno Devi temple (located in Katra, Jammu and Kashmir) six times. He is a Christian and goes to church twice a week even now. But that’s what India has always been like. You will find Christians whose name is Rahul, Rohit etc. We ourselves go to gurudwaras and many Hindus go to Ajmer Sharif Dargah (located in Rajasthan). This is our Hindustan. Why is it so surprising (now)? There’s a temple in my house. My son’s name is Vardaan. This is the fabric of our country,” he pointed out.

Vikrant further added that his brother Moeen joins in these celebrations too. “My brother does Laxmi puja on the occasion of Diwali. His conversion (to Islam) is his personal choice. But we celebrate Diwali and Holi together here. On the occasion of Eid, we celebrate it at his place, having biryani. Today, that fulcrum is absent (in society),” he added.

Vikrant Massey is currently gearing up for the release of his upcoming movie, The Sabarmati Report, based on Godhra train burning incident of 2002. The movie will hit the screens this Friday.
