Thamma box office collection worldwide day 1: Aditya Sarpotdar’s vampire romance, starring Ayushmann Khurrana and Rashmika Mandanna, managed to secure the big Diwali release spot this year, thanks to the historic precedent set by its predecessor, Amar Kaushik’s blockbuster horror comedy Stree 2 last year. However, if the opening day figure is anything to go by, Thamma’s collection failed to match upto Stree 2.

It released on Tuesday, a day after Diwali, when a lot of offices and schools were shut. Thamma could earn only Rs 24 crore on its opening day. However, the makers announced that Thama box office collection on day 1 stands at Rs 25.11 crore. “It’s a Diwali Thammaka for the Maddock Horror Comedy Universe! Thamma opens with a bang – ₹25.11 Cr NBOC on Day 1! Now the third-highest opener for #MaddockFilms and second-highest in the MHCU, right after #Stree2. The madness is real, the numbers speak louder!” they said in a statement.

The film is also Ayushmann’s highest ever opening collection. The actor said in a statement, “I’m an entertainer so it brings me so much joy to see people loving and enjoying Thamma and my performance during this big Diwali holidays. Having carved a niche with my unique, quirky films, I was eagerly waiting for that one opportunity to bring my brand of cinema on Diwali – a festival that has seen the biggest of the biggest superstars release their tentpole films in. Thamma is the tentpole film of my career and I’m fortunate to have got Diwali to release it. Every year, I used to go to theatres with my family to watch a superstar’s film release. Today, I have gone to theatres to watch my film with my family. It feels incredible!”

In comparison, Thamma’s box office collection is about half of Stree 2, which amassed Rs 51.80 crore on its opening day on the occasion of Independence Day last year. Additionally, Rajkummar Rao-Shraddha Kapoor film garnered another Rs 8.50 crore from paid previews alone.

After a long 11-week run, the total domestic box office collection of Stree 2 concluded at Rs 597.99 crore, as per Sacnilk, thus beating that of the Hindi dubbed version of Atlee’s action thriller Jawan, starring Shah Rukh Khan, which amassed Rs 582.31 crore the previous year, to become the highest grossing Hindi film of all time domestically.

Thamma clocks horror universe’s second highest box office opening

However, despite mixed reviews, Thamma may cash in on the buzz around the Maddock Horror Comedy Universe, that it’s a part of, to grow from strength to strength at the domestic box office. That happened in the case of Sarpotdar’s last directorial, Munjya, last year.

That film was headlined by the CGI-created titular ghost character, and supported by newcomers like Abhay Verma and Sharvari Wagh. It opened at Rs 4 crore in India, but picked up pace at the domestic box office, with its six-week run concluding at Rs 101.60 crore, thus entering the coveted Rs 100 crore club.

Munjya wasn’t the first film in the Maddock Horror Comedy Universe to achieve that feat. Stree 2’s box office momentum was also influenced by the success of its first part, which established the Maddock Horror Comedy Universe back in 2018. Marking the directorial debut of Amar Kaushik, and also starring Rajkummar Rao and Shraddha Kapoor among others, it opened at Rs 6.82 crore and went on to earn Rs 167 crore at the domestic box office.

Kaushik followed that up with the creature comedy Bhediya, starring Varun Dhawan and Kriti Sanon, earned only Rs 7.48 crore on its opening day and leading to a total domestic box office collection of Rs 68.99 crore, also getting impacted by the Covid pandemic. Thus, as far as the opening day figure is concerned, Stree 2 ranks the highest, followed by Thamma, Bhediya, Stree, and Munjya in the Maddock Horror Comedy Universe.

Thamma clocks 2025’s third highest opening

As far as the Hindi films released this year are concerned, Thamma has scored the third highest box office opening. The biggest one is still reserved by Laxman Utekar’s period drama Chhaava, starring Vicky Kaushal and Rashmika, also backed by Dinesh Vijan’s Maddock Films, at Rs 31 crore. It’s followed by AR Murugadoss’ action drama Sikandar, starring Salman Khan, at Rs 26 crore. Thamma has a tie with Tarun Manshukhani’s whodunit comedy Housefull 5, headlined by Akshay Kumar, on the third spot at Rs 24 crore.
