Taapsee Pannu reveals OTT platforms are pushing back, don’t want to spend money on promoting small films: ‘We can’t take every film’

While many may think that OTT platforms are a boon for small-budget films featuring no big stars, Taapsee Pannu debunked this myth. During Expresso on Friday, the Dunki actor revealed that it isn’t easy to sell small films to OTT platforms, as they also avoid spending money on PR and look for more lucrative films.

Taapsee explained, “Every studio started packaging their films so that they could get a good price and sell it to OTT so that you are not facing the risk of recovery because you don’t have big names to pull in the audience. Strangely, now, OTT has also turned back and said we can’t take every film and we don’t want to spend money on the PR of every film.”

She added, “They decided that a small film with no stars is difficult to push in the market even on OTT and they don’t want to spend the money on the PR. They ask to release the film in theatres with whatever little PR money you have and they will release on OTT after whatever number of weeks in the theatres.”

Taapsee Pannu also shared her experience with her production venture Dhak Dhak, which featured four women protagonists played by Sanjana Sanghi, Ratna Pathak Shah, Dia Mirza, and Fatima Sana Shaikh. Despite being pulled from theatres within a week, Dhak Dhak performed exceptionally well on OTT, surpassing the well-promoted The Archies, which also marked the debut of star kids like Suhana Khan, Khushi Kapoor, and Agastya Nanda.

Taapsee was last seen in Rajkumar Hirani’s Dunki, alongside Shah Rukh Khan. She is now looking forward to the release of Phir Aayi Hasseen Dillruba, where she stars with Vikrant Massey and Sunny Kaushal. Additionally, she will be seen in Khel Khel Mein, starring with Akshay Kumar, Vaani Kapoor, and Fardeen Khan.

The HSBC presents Expresso in association with Taj Hotels was held at Taj Falaknuma Palace in Hyderabad on July 5.
