On the day Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the rituals for the Ram Temple Pran Pratishtha ceremony, a section of celebrities from film industries across India took to social media to share the Preamble of the Indian Constitution. It is seen as criticism of the state-sponsored celebration of the event, claiming it goes against the secular values of the country.
Bollywood actor Sushmita Sen joined the voices supporting secularism by reposting writer-director Atul Mongia’s Instagram post featuring a picture of the Constitution’s Preamble. Sen captioned the post with “#Motherland.”
The Constitution’s Preamble reads as, “We the people of India, having solemnly resolved to constitute India a into a Sovereign, Socialist, Secular, Democratic, Republic and to secure to all its citizens: Justice, social, economic and political; Liberty of thought, expression, belief, faith and worship; Equality of status and of opportunity and to promote among them all; Fraternity assuring the dignity of the individual and the unity and integrity of the Nation; in our Constituent Assembly, this twenty-sixth day of November, 1949 do Hereby Adopt, Enact and give to ourselves this Constitution.”
