Sharmila Tagore recalls when Sara Ali Khan pranked Amitabh Bachchan, started making up words: ‘He said that’s not quite right’

Sharmila Tagore said Sara Ali Khan had 'tremendous confidence as a child' and was never shy of speaking up. She once pranked Amitabh Bachchan by making up words.

Veteran actor Sharmila Tagore says her granddaughter Sara Ali Khan always had the acting gene in her, as she recalled stories of her growing up years when she was “entertaining”. Sara Ali Khan is the daughter of Saif Ali Khan and Amrita Singh.

Speaking at a recent Mother’s Day event for YFLO, the 79-year-old actor said Sara would always tell stories and “play pranks”. Sharmila Tagore said Sara had “tremendous confidence as a child” so she would always speak up.

“She had that germ in her to do things. She would also often say things which were very outrageous. I remember when Saif was not well and Amitabh Bachchan had come to meet him in the hospital, they started conversing in Hindi.

“All the ‘Devrani, jethani, mami sa’ and then she invented a word and Amitabh said, ‘I don’t think that is quite right.’ She just made up a bogus word. She had that confidence, didn’t feel overawed by anybody. She was well behaved, but never held back. She was always very entertaining,” the veteran added.

Over the years, Sara Ali Khan has cultivated a personality of being a goofy, joke-cracking, prank-playing actor. While Sharmila said the young actor always had this in her, Sara had told Indianexpress.com in an interview how she runs the risk of not being taken seriously due to her jokes.

“Because I am funny, loud, I can be bindaas, people can think that is all there to me. If I have two more cups of coffee I will be cracking NG (adult) jokes with you right now. But that doesn’t mean that this (graceful) is not me, that a bit of gravitas isn’t part of my personality. People get into extremes– this or that. Why can’t one be both? Why can’t I have a sense of humour and a sense of self respect?”

“Because I am silly, I am funny, that is who I am– but that is not all that I am. I run the risk of sometimes trivalising my own self, I run the risk of people not taking me seriously,” she added.
