Sharda Sinha death: PM Modi expresses grief, folk singer to be laid to rest with full state honours

'Bihar Kokila' Sharda Sinha died on Tuesday at the age of 72 in Delhi. She was being treated for complications due to cancer.

It is that time of the year when people across the world celebrate Chhath puja with Sharda Sinha‘s popular Chhath songs. This year, just when the festivities began, the news of her passing was shared by her son Anshuman. The Padma Bhushan recipient died at AIIMS in Delhi on Tuesday due to complications arising out of cancer. She was 72.

PM Modi pays tribute to the folk singer

Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to his X handle to express his grief about Sharda Sinha’s passing. He wrote, “I am deeply saddened by the demise of renowned folk singer Sharda Sinha ji. Her Maithili and Bhojpuri folk songs have been very popular for the last several decades. The echo of her melodious songs associated with the great festival of faith, Chhath, will always remain. Her demise is an irreparable loss for the music world. My condolences are with her family and fans in this hour of grief. Om Shanti!”


 

Union Ministers Rajnath Singh, and Amit Shah too paid their condolences on their respective X handles.

“Sharda Sinha ji, famous as Bihar Kokila, made Maithili and Bhojpuri folk songs popular among the masses and kept mesmerizing the film world as a playback singer”, wrote Amit Shah.


 

Rajnath Singh shared, ” She was a multi-talented folk singer who made Bhojpuri language popular among the masses. People will remember her songs for a long time.”

Celebs pay tribute to Sharda Sinha

Actor-turned-politician Manoj Bajpayee, who paid his last respects to the popular folk singer at AIIMS in Delhi, took to his X handle to share photo and videos of the singer from his visit and wrote, “Today I had my last darshan of elder sister Sharda Didi, who spread the sweetness of Bhojpuri across the country and the world through Chhathi Maiya and devotional music, at AIIMS Delhi. The demise of Didi Sharda is an irreparable loss for the Bhojpuri world and the country.”


 

Laapataa Ladies actor and politician Ravi Kishan expressed sadness as he wrote on X: “Goddess of voice, the identity of our culture, without whose voice Chhath festival, marriage, all are incomplete, today Chhathi Maiya called Maa Sharda Sinha ji to her.
May Chhathi Maiya grant them heaven.”


Sharda Sinha’s funeral to take place with full state honours

Sharda Sinha, honoured with a Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan, will be laid to rest with full state of honours. Her son, Anushuman told ANI, “We have decided that the last rites of my mother will take place at the same place where my father’s last rite was performed. We will take her mortal remains to Patna.”

Speaking to media, Manoj Tiwari confirmed, “Sharda Sinha’s last rites will be performed with state honours. Her mortal remains will be kept in Patna for the last darshan.” The folk singer’s last rites will reportedly be performed on November 7.

Singer dies a month after her husband’s death

Sharda Sinha’s last facebook post was for her husband, Brajkishore Sinha, who died on September 22. On the occasion of Karwa Chauth, Sharda Sinha shared a picture of herself on her facebook account and wrote, “My forehead looks empty without sindoor. However, with Sinha sahab’s memories, I am trying to keep my singing career alive. I pay tribute to Sinha sahab today.”

On October 7, Sharda Sinha shared another post dedicated to her late husband, where she quoted the lines from her popular song, “Kahe Toh Se Sajna” from Maine Pyaar Kiya as she missed her husband.
