Aditya Pancholi appeared in various negative roles in Hindi films across the 1990s but as per his wife, actor Zarina Wahab, Aditya refused to accept roles of character artiste as he got older because he once saw veteran actor Shammi Kapoor getting lesser than ideal treatment on set. Zarina claimed in a new interview that Aditya once saw Shammi Kapoor getting his make-up done near the bushes in a garden and found it extremely disrespectful.
In a chat with Lehren Retro, Zarina shared that Aditya was once shooting with Shammi in a bungalow in Juhu. One of the rooms in the bungalow was cleaned up for Aditya to get ready. When he reached that room, which even had an AC, he asked if Shammi Kapoor had arrived, and learnt that the ‘Yahoo’ star was already there, but he was sitting in the garden. As Aditya looked in the garden, he saw Shammi sitting on a chair, near the bushes and getting his make up done. “He looked down and he saw that Shammi ji was sitting near the bushes under the umbrella and getting his make up done. Aditya ran downstairs and asked ‘Sir, aap neeche? Please come to the make up room.’ Shammi ji said ‘No, no I am comfortable here. You carry on’.”
Zarina said that this incident moved Aditya so deeply that he decided to give up on acting once he was done with lead roles. “After that he decided that when I have to become a character artiste, I will not work. If they can treat Shammi ji like this, then who are we? This was the main reason he stopped working,” she said and added, “People who looked up to you when you were a hero, look down at you when you become a character artiste. It’s not correct but such is the industry.”
She mentioned that his last appearance in films was in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Bajirao Mastani. She claimed that Bhansali called Aditya for Heeramandi as well but he refused. She said, “Bhansali called him for Heeramandi but he told him ‘sir, please don’t feel bad. I don’t want to work’.”
