Govinda was a superstar in the 80s and 90s who used to shoot for multiple films in various shifts on the same day. He used to work on about ten projects at the same time, many times making producers wait. He was known for his tardiness, but his stardom was such that his tantrums were always entertained. His dance acumen, acting skills, comic timings are what made him a bankable star of the era. Once when the actor was shooting in Hyderabad, Aamir Khan rushed to witness him act on set. This incident was fondly recalled by Govinda’s co-star Shakti Kapoor during the promotions of Rangeela Babu about five years ago.

Speaking to Bollywood Bubble, Shakti Kapoor shared, “I remember an incident from older days. Govinda and I were shooting for a qawwali scene on stage in Hyderabad. It was a face-off between the both of us. From a distance, I saw someone very short standing in a corner in the crowd. When I looked at him, I felt like I have seen this person somewhere. After a while, I realised it was Aamir Khan.”

He added, “I asked him, ‘Sir, what are you doing here? Someone bring him a chair and tea.’ He said, ‘I have come to see how Govinda manages to lip sync so well and how he manages to give such long shots in one take.’ He then said, ‘I am the biggest fan of Govinda.'”

When asked what has changed in Govinda over the years, Shakti Kapoor quickly replied, “The one thing that has changed about him over the years is his punctuality. Earlier, he would arrive at 9 pm for a 9 am shift. Now, he arrives at 8:30 am for a 9 a.m. shift.” He added, “Insecurity aadmi ko kaha se kaha pahucha deti hai. (Insecurity changes people). Now he is very professional and entire industry knows it.”

In the same interview, Shakti Kapoor also rooted for his old friend and co-star. He said, “People say now its too late for the actor to make a comeback, I don’t believe it. We have seen people like Amrish Puri starting at 44. Its never too late for an actor or artiste.”

Aamir Khan has often shared his admiration for Govinda. Back in 2010, in an interview with PTI, the Laal Singh Chadha actor shared, “My favourite actor is Govinda. He can really make me laugh. I just love his films. ” He added, “Govinda is one actor who really entertains me. He has got a great comic timing and he is a fine actor.” Sharing his favourite picture of the actor, Aamir said, “I have seen his film Sandwich some 10 to 12 times.”
