Shah Rukh Khan, Saif Ali Khan and Preity Zinta starrer Kal Ho Naa Ho will soon complete 20 years. Director Nikkhil Advani, who made his directorial debut with the iconic and heart-wrenching film, has opened up about how SRK was about to quit the film due to an injury after shooting it for four days. The filmmaker said that they decided to delay the film and wait for Shah Rukh to recover.

In an interview with Rajshri Unplugged, Nikkhil said, “Shah Rukh fell ill with his back after four days of shooting, and he said, ‘Take me out of the film’. We said no and we decided to delay it. We delayed the film by six months.”

Nikkhil also revealed that there was immense pressure on him while filming Kal Ho Naa Ho. He said, “There was pressure because ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’ and ‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham’ had done so well. If the next film from Dharma Productions under Karan did not do well, then all the blame would have been on the fact that the 100% track record was spoiled by Nikkhil Advani. So the pressure was immense.”

Talking about the locations of the film, Nikkhil said that New York was an expensive location and had its own problems. He said, “Nobody had ever shot in New York before. People had gone till London, people had gone to Switzerland, people had gone to Europe. To shoot in New York, which has its own problems with unions and… It’s an expensive location to shoot for a first-time filmmaker or a debut filmmaker. But Yash Johar was a master with taking any production challenge up. So it was not a very easy film.”

Kal Ho Naa Ho was released in 2003.
