Sanjay Khan and Shatrughan Sinha were among the big names in the 70s and 80s. Both were known for living life on their own terms and being part of every big Bollywood party. At one such party, the two got involved in an argument that escalated to a point where Shatrughan Sinha and his friends ended up firing gun shots outside Sanjay Khan’s house. In a recent interview, veteran actor Ranjeet shared a detailed story about the incident, revealing how he had to work as the mediator between the two parties and resolved the issue with the help of Dilip Kumar.
In an interview with Vickey Lalwani, Ranjeet shared, “There was a party at some socialite’s place, which I was supposed to attend. People like Sanjay Khan, Zeenat Aman, Shatrughan Sinha, they were all present there. This was a phase when Sanjay was not doing good in business. His affair with Zeenat had just started. She was working with him in one of his films and also handling his finances for him.”
Although Ranjeet didn’t attend the party, he learnt about the incident through a friend who witnessed the incident. “My friend told me that Shatrughan Sinha pinched Sanjay Khan’s cheek, which he didn’t take well, and he slapped him for that”, said Ranjeet.
He added, “This provoked the fight between them. Reena Roy, who was in a relationship with Shatrughan, was also present at the party. She got all furious. Sanjay fought with her too, this escalated the situation and then Sanjay said if you want to deal with this, let’s get out of here, we cannot ruin someone else’s party.”
After this, the whole gang left the venue and reached Ranjeet’s house, which was open for all his friends any time of the day.
He recalled, “At that time, there was no phone to communicate. I was with my girlfriend and I didn’t want them to see her. I locked myself in the house. Suddenly, I heard shots being fired. Ultimately, they fired the shots in the air then they went to Sanjay Khan’s house, and fired shots there too. These were all Shatrughan’s friends. I was just waiting for them to leave so that I can drop off my girlfriend.”
“As soon as they left, I rushed to drop off my girlfriend. When I returned, I saw Sanjay sitting at my house. I asked him, ‘what are you doing here?’ He then told me the entire story and was furious. He was like: ‘These idiots are firing in 21st century, they fired at my house too.’ He wanted to file a complaint. But, I suggested that he speak with them and resolve it internally and not make it a public thing. He agreed but said, make him apologise to me or else I will file a case.”
After this conversation with Sanjay, Ranjeet dialled up Prakash Mehra as well as Shatrughan Sinha and convinced them to come at his residence and resolve the incident by apologising to Sanjay. Shatrughan and Prakash were working together on a film and mostly hanged out together.
“Both Prakash and Shatru were waiting at my house. Sanjay hadn’t come yet. Then I saw a car coming, it had Zeenat and a lawyer. Suddenly, I heard sirens all around my house. Then I realised the house was surrounded by police. Apparently, Sanjay told the police that these guys have ganged up here to beat him up. ‘They want to kill me’. Then I had to speak with the police, finally I convinced Sanjay to come to my place. He ranted to me about Shatrughan and all he has done to make his career. I was getting late, so I left them all at my place and went to work.”
He added, “In the evening, I got to know that Prakash Mehra and Shatrughan Sinha were taken to the Santa Cruz police station. Dilip Kumar had to intervene. The next day news headlines read: ‘Murder was planned at Ranjeet’s residence’.” However, things were finally resolved.
