What truly made Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s Animal a successful film was the conviction the filmmaker had about various facets of the Ranbir Kapoor-starrer. At any point of the film, one might think the makers indulged a bit too much, and soon enough, there would be one more scene that made the previous one feel subtle. And yet, none of it was reined in, and eventually, every aspect of Animal became polarising. One such audacious scene was undoubtedly the nude walk of Ranbir’s Ranvijay Singh after the successful completion of his heart transplant. In an interview on Game Changers, Sandeep opened up about what really ticked between him and Ranbir, and how he could pull off such scenes.
“The success of Animal is due to the understanding between Ranbir and me,” said Sandeep, adding how any other actor might have had problems with how certain scenes were sketched and staged. “Whatever I liked, he liked, and I’m still not sure how it happened. Even when I was asking him if we were going in the right direction, he simply asked me to do what I wanted to do, and not ask him anything.”
Giving the example of the nude walk scene, Sandeep pointed out, “We had to put a prosthetic for the thighs, and the lower part of the body, and it was perfect during the test shoot. However, during the actual shooting, it wasn’t looking nice. In fact, we planned to shoot the scene in full focus, and using props to cover the groin as he walked. However, due to the prosthetics not working properly, I just said we will shoot the scene out of focus.”
The Arjun Reddy filmmaker said that it was a valid reason for an actor to get irritated, especially since hours went in getting the measurements ready for the prosthetics, and preparation for the scene. “He just said okay immediately. There was no discussion. It was a ten-minute conversation where I said shooting it in out-of-focus would make things more spooky and curious. And he was ready,” said Sandeep, who reiterated that such a camaraderie between the actor and director would make things very comfortable. “See, the results could be anything, but if this happens, the film would be fun; it is all about conviction.”
Backed by Bhushan Kumar, Animal, which also starred Anil Kapoor, Rashmika Mandanna, and Bobby Deol, received mixed reviews, and was called out for a lot of aspects, including misogyny, and glorification of violence. However, the film found resonance at the box-office, amassing over Rs 660 crores gross domestic collection, and becoming one of the most successful Hindi films in recent times.
