Suchitra Pillai’s portrayal of the possessive, overbearing girlfriend in Farhan Akhtar’s directorial debut Dil Chahta Hai remains etched in the minds of many even 23 years after its release. In a recent interaction, Suchitra shared some behind-the-scenes memories from the iconic film, including the time when Saif Ali Khan made her laugh during the film’s shoot, resulting in her getting an earful from Farhan Akhtar.

She told Siddharth Kannan, “It was fun shooting for this film. Most of my scenes were with Saif and I had one big scene with all of them before the song “Koi Kahe Kehta Rahe,” which was shot at a nightclub. It was super fun and Saif was always fun. All these guys wearing tight leather pants… it was a good sight for me. I remember in one of the scene before the song when Aamir comes and sits on the chair beside me and Saif said something in my ear. He said, ‘Haan, I know where you are looking.’ I burst out laughing immediately after that and Farhan started screaming. He said, ‘What are you laughing about?’ But how can I say what I am laughing about. But we had so much fun.”

Speaking about her experience of working with Akshaye Khanna and Aamir Khan, she said, “Akshaye is a quite reserved person but when I got to know him, he was so much fun. People used to be scared of him, thinking what would be his mood today.” She added, “Aamir was a perfectionist even then. He would do rehearsals. But he had no ego, no showsha. In fact, all the three actors were like that, so down-to-earth, just present to make a fantastic film and it showed.”
