One of the biggest stars in Indian television, Ram Kapoor, won many hearts with his popular shows like Bade Achhe Lagte Hain, Kasamh Se, among many others. Recently, the actor shared that his character in Bade Ache Lagte Hain left such a lasting impression on viewers that many women began encouraging their husbands to embrace their plus-size physiques. However, he admitted that his lifestyle at the time was far from healthy, leading him to develop Type 2 diabetes.
“Women used to come up to me and say, ‘Because of you, I now tell my husband not to lose weight.’ So, in a sense, I have betrayed them (by losing weight) — although the show is over now. But my Bade Achhe Lagte Hain fans still tell me on Instagram that they want their old, fatty Ram back. I take that as a huge compliment because they loved me so much like that (the way I looked back then),” he said during a recent appearance on Cyrus Broacha’s YouTube channel.
While he appreciated the affection he received back then, Ram acknowledged, “I, however, cannot be the ambassador of unhealthiness all my life. I knew that, for myself and for my children, I eventually had to get fit. For my career, I was lucky enough to be accepted as a fat man.” Mentioning that his wife Gautami Kapoor fully supports his fitness journey, Ram shared that even when he was at his heaviest, she never pressured him to change, as his appearance played a key role in his success.
“Kasamh Se made me one of television’s top actors. At that time, my plan was to make the right decisions, work my a** off and do whatever it took to succeed. I thought that (phase) would last just five years, but it went on for 15. Throughout those 15 years, Gautami never said anything to me, though she was worried about my health since I had developed Type 2 diabetes and other health issues,” he added.
Stating that he was determined to turn his life around once he reached 50, Ram recalled losing 30 kg twice in the past. “That was through dieting, which is wrong — you should never diet.” Emphasising that he isn’t an expert and is speaking purely from personal experience, he added, “I was morbidly obese, weighing 140 kg for 20 years, with all the associated health problems. I lost 30 kg twice, but both times, the weight came back. This time, I lost 55 kg and reached a greater level of health.”
“Diets are temporary and require willpower. Instead of diets, you have to change your mindset,” he explained. Ram shared that he now eats only twice a day — at around 10.30 am and 6.30 pm — and has completely eliminated snacking, eating in between meals and after sunset.
