Veteran actor Kabir Bedi recently spoke about the mental health struggles faced by the late actor Parveen Babi, with whom he had a brief romantic relationship. He shared insights into how Parveen wrestled with her mind for years, revealing the emotional toll it took on her. Kabir also recounted the moment he learned of her passing, describing the deep grief he felt upon hearing the news.
Speaking to Bollywood Bubble, Kabir shared, “I was shooting for a film and somebody said that Parveen Babi has passed away. I felt deep grief because I knew how much she had struggled in life, not for roles, but with her own mind. The struggle was within her mind.”
Kabir revealed that Parveen kept her mental health issues private, fearing the stigma that could have derailed her career. He said, “For so many years she hid her mental (health) struggle from the people of the industry. She knew that if they got to know there was a problem with her mind, her career would be over. Imagine living with this fear when you are a star. She faced all of this and at the same time her mind didn’t support her.”
Throughout her life, Parveen was involved in romantic relationships with some high-profile persons in the industry, including actor-playback singer Danny Denzongpa, Kabir Bedi, and later filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt. Kabir recalled that all three of her former partners came to pay their respects at her funeral. “She was a beautiful, intelligent, sensitive person. In the end, during her funeral, I was present, Mahesh Bhatt was there and Danny Denzongpa was there,” he said.
Parveen Babi reportedly struggled with schizophrenia and faced turbulent relationships with Bollywood’s leading men. In her later years, she lived in isolation, plagued by fears of being killed. On January 20, 2005, her body was discovered in her Juhu apartment after neighbours reported a strong odour emanating from her home, marking the tragic end of a life that had seen immense highs and haunting lows.
