Oscars 2024: Priyanka Chopra-backed Indian documentary To Kill a Tiger loses out at the Academy Awards to 20 Days in Mariupol

To Kill a Tiger was nominated alongside films like Bobi Wine: The People’s President, The Eternal Memory, Four Daughters, and the eventual winner 20 Days in Mariupol.

The documentary follows the lives of a Jharkhand family, campaigning for justice after their teenage daughter was brutally raped. According to the film’s official synopsis, To Kill a Tiger is a “cinematic documentary” that chronicles the struggles of the 13-year-old girl’s father, who gets the men accused of rape arrested but his “relief is short-lived, as the villagers and their leaders launch a sustained campaign to force the family to drop the charges.”

Actors Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Dev Patel and Mindy Kaling serve as executive producers on the film, which has released on Netflix. The film is produced by Cornelia Principe and David Oppenheim had its world premiere at Toronto International Film Festival where it won the Amplify Voices Award for Best Canadian Feature Film.

The 2024 Oscars come after a historic last year for India at the Academy Awards, where RRR’s “Naatu Naatu” won the award for Best Music (Original Song) and the Guneet Monga-backed documentary, The Elephant Whisperers, bagged an award under the category Documentary Short Film.

The 96th Academy Awards took place at the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood and saw the biggest Hollywood stars assemble in Los Angeles for the award-night of the year.
