Veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah was left bereaved after learning about his old friend Rajesh Vivek’s demise on Thursday (January 14). Both actors were students of the same drama school and have acted together in plays and movies including Rajesh’s debut movie ‘Junoon.’
Speaking exclusively to IndianExpress.com about Lagaan actor Rajesh Vivek, Naseeruddin Shah said, “We were students together in the drama school and he was junior to me and a good friend. I introduced him to Shyam babu (Shyam Benegal) and that is how he got cast in Junoon as the Fakir. Unfortunately, Rajesh Vivek’s career didn’t quite go as one would have hoped. I think he was a little too eccentric for the film industry. But he was a really marvelous actor. I feel very sad that he couldn’t fulfill the potential that he had and the potential was really tremendous because I know him quite well.” (Read: ‘Lagaan’ actor Rajesh Vivek dies of heart attack in Hyderabad)
Expressing deep agony at his demise, Naseeruddin Shah said, “I am grieved to hear of his passing because I felt he would have amounted to something sooner or later. Unfortunately that is the trouble with a lot of actors. They don’t look after themselves. I guess that is what happened with him.” (PHOTOS: Lagaan, Swades, Veerana: Rajesh Vivek’s hit films)
Naseer fondly recalled Rajesh Vivek as a muscular chap from NSD (National School of Drama). “He was quite a sturdy person and not a skinny weakling.”
