The makers of the Netflix film Nadaaniyan have had a tumultuous week, to say the least. Scathing reviews and Instagram mishaps have followed the Ibrahim Ali Khan and Khushi Kapoor-starrer ever since its debut. But amid all the clamour, the film managed to land a spot on the Top 10 leaderboard on Netflix. The question is, how has the film done in comparison with other Indian titles in their first week? For example, Junaid Khan, son of actor Aamir Khan, also made his debut with a Netflix film: Maharaj (2024). While the film had to deal with a fair share of criticism, it did get 5.3 million views in its first week, while Nadaaniyan has only managed 3.9 million. Maharaj also featured Jaideep Ahlawat, Shalini Pandey, and Sharvari.
By comparison, Kho Gaye Hum Kahan (2023) did 2.8 million in its first week but did much better when it came to reviews. The cast of the film included Ananya Panday, Siddhant Chaturvedi, Adarsh Goutam, and Kalki Koechlin. Director Sujoy Ghosh’s Jaane Jaan (2023), starring Kareena Kapoor, Jaideep Ahlawat, and Vijay Verma scored 6.4 million views in its first week on Netflix.
The Zoya Akhtar musical The Archies (2023) posted 2.2 million views in its first week. The cast included Shah Rukh Khan’s daughter Suhana Khan, Amitabh Bachchan’s grandson Agastya Nanda, and Sridevi and Boney Kapoor’s daughter Khushi Kapoor. Shah Rukh Khan’s Jawan had 3.7 million views in its first week, while its Tamil and Telugu versions also made it into the Top 10 films in India on Netflix.
Ibrahim’s sister Sara Ali Khan had came out in her brother’s support via social media and congratulated him on his debut. Interestingly, her Netflix film Murder Mubaarak (2024) gathered 3.2 million views in its first week. While Nadaaniyan has had a grim first week when it comes to reviews, the film seems to be getting decent traction on Netflix.
