What is the basic need of any person? Well, Indian cinema has taught us that it is ‘Roti, Kapda, aur Makaan’ (Food, Clothes, and Home). Well, in the case of singer-musician Mika Singh, there needs to be a small change in the basic need… it is Roti, Kapda, aur 99 Makaan. The man has 99 homes, and in a recent interview with Pinkvilla, opened up about his fascination for real estate investment.

“I hope it reaches a round 100,” said Mika, adding that it wasn’t even a dream that he worked towards, but was just open to the opportunities presented to him. “When I started off, my salary was Rs 75. I never regretted that I was working on a low salary. In fact, as someone in my early teens, this was a really big number. I played the guitar, sang songs, performed in jagrans, sang kirtans and qawwalis, etc… There is no devotional space where I haven’t performed. Then, I met Daler (Mehndi) paaji, and yeah. If you are getting something in your life, accept it. It is not always about dreaming, it is also about realising and accepting.”

Talking about how he zeroed in on his 99th house, Mika shared that he first got the flat in 2012, but the entire building was embroiled in some legal controversy. “This is one of my favourite buildings. I liked it so much that I got six flats in the same building. But due to the legal issues, I couldn’t come live here. Many celebrities who had flats in this building faced the same predicament,” said Mika, who chipped in with the information that in between buying this flat and getting its possession, he bought one more flat in a nearby building, which also had Kapil Sharma as one of its inhabitants, and moved there.

Explaining the amenities of the flat, which was designed by Gauri Khan, Mika revealed that the house initially had eight bedrooms, but she changed it to five, and made them much bigger. When prodded if these 99 houses are investments, necessity, or just simple interest, Mika pointed out that it is important to know the power of savings. “There are people who invest in sunglasses, jewelry, and even shoes. I believe we should earn money and spend it wisely. I have a 100 acre farm that is one of my prized possessions. But it is also important to note that because of this farm, around 150 families are getting their livelihoods in order. Farming is happening along with a lot of other lucrative businesses,” said Mika, once again reiterating the importance of saving money in the right places.

He also recalled getting his 99th house designed by Gauri Khan and how she had one condition. “Gauri ma’am had one demand that whatever I do, you can’t question me. Like usually, I don’t use green colour in my house, I only use beige. All my houses only have brown and beige. In the middle of this house, she has added a green couch. It took her almost two years to do this and I never questioned her. I didn’t even come and see it while she was working on it, but you can see the result of my patience,” he said.

“Every human gets a chance, an opportunity, and it is very important that we respect it to the fullest,” said Mika, ending this aspect of his thought process with a quick aside about why his fandom is still strong, which, in turn, has kept the opportunities coming. “See your fan as your client. If you work for them, you will never have a downfall. The problem starts when you take them for granted. In my head, be it a marriage event, a corporate event, a school or a college event, my only aim is to make the fans dance, and keep them entertained.”
