Salman Khan’s latest Eid offering, the family entertainer Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan, is expected to deliver low numbers on its first day of release in theatres. According to early estimates, the film will make around Rs 14 crore on Friday, according to industry tracker Sacnilk. This is nowhere near the high benchmark that Salman had set for himself. The numbers may see an upswing as India celebrates Eid on Saturday.
But the actor has been having a difficult time lately, with multiple back-to-back commercial disappointments. According to Sacnilk, KKBKKJ registered a 10.39% occupancy in morning shows, and a 13.44% occupancy in afternoon shows. The film is being released in 4500 screens across the country, and will have 16000 shows per day. KKBKKJ will also play in over 1200 screens overseas. If these predictions come true, the film will open in the same range as Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar, which was targeted at urban audiences.
A lot has been riding on KKBKKJ, considering the tough phase that Bollywood has been experiencing in the post-pandemic era, and near-constant chatter about the old guard having lost their pull among audiences. Shah Rukh Khan proved naysayers wrong with the resounding success of Pathaan earlier this year, and Salman would’ve hoped for some of that attention to spill over to him.
But unlike Pathaan, which was favourably received by critics and unanimously praised by audiences, the early reports for KKBKKJ aren’t encouraging. Awarding it one star out of five, the Indian Express’ Shubhra Gupta wrote in her review, “The fact that there’s no other name in the credit line of Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan is not accidental. Every one else in the cast is incidental to the non-existent plot, which exists only to serve the legend of Salman Khan, in and as Bhai and Jaan, aka Bhaijaan.”
Salman hasn’t had an outright hit since 2017’s Tiger Zinda Hai. Each of his subsequent releases — Race 3, Bharat, Dabangg 3, Antim: The Final Truth — underperformed. That being said, Bharat delivered the biggest opening of his career, Rs 42 crore. This year, the only Bollywood movie aside from Pathaan that has managed to attract audiences is Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar, which did a busines of Rs 145 crore in India.
