Kiran and Aamir Khan announced their separation in 2021 and the duo has been quite open about their marriage and divorce. In a recent chat, Kiran spoke about how she went from being an independent person, to being known as the “the wife of someone.” Kiran acknowledged that since she was married to one of biggest superstars of Hindi cinema, she understood why people identified her that way and after a point, it did not bother her a lot.
Talking on the YouTube channel of Shoma Chaudhury, Kiran said that in her mind, she never lost her identity “but somehow from being a strong independent person, I became the wife of someone.” She laughed and shared that at people still stop her and identify her as Aamir Khan’s wife. “I mean up until today at the airport, I was aked ‘Aamir Khan’s wife?’ So I was like ‘no longer’ and she looked at me very puzzled. She was like ‘are you are are you not?'” she shared.
Kiran then said that since Aamir is big superstar, she accepted that she would be known by his name. “So that kind of loss of personal identity was somethig that I guess was par for the course when you marry a major superstar. As far as the public was concerned, it was a way of identifying me. They had nothing else to identify me by other than the fact that I was his wife and he is hugely loved and hugely well known. So it didn’t bother me beyond a point honestly,” she said.
Kiran acknowledged that she made an “arthouse film” Dhobi Ghat which “didn’t earn me legions of fans” so she understood why they identified her with Aamir’s name. She also spoke about Aamir being the supportive partner and said that he had been a “partner in the real sense of the word.” “Aamir has been one of the most supportive partners, whether it was in my work, whether it was in our decision to have a surrogate, when we decided to get divorced, we have been partners in the real sense of he word,” she said.
Kiran and Aamir are co-parenting their son Azad.
