Ananya Panday, Siddhant Chaturvedi and Adarsh Gourav starrer Netflix film Kho Gaye Hum Kahan has been receiving a lot of praise from the audience. Helmed by Arjun Varain Singh, the film is co-written by Reema Kagti and Zoya Akhtar, and produced by Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani. It revolves around three friends, Ahana, Neil and Imaad, who have been together since their school days. In a recent interview, the creators of the film shared why there was no love angle between the three friends in this film.
Speaking to Humans of Cinema, director Singh said he had never planned to create anything romantic or sexual between Ahana (Ananya), Neil (Adarsh) and Imaad (Siddhant). He said, “That was never a part of the plan. It just needed to be natural and it seemed fun. We often see three boys but it’s nice to have a girl who is a part of the gang. That is how it is in the real life as well.”
Filmmaker Zoya Akhtar backed Singh and added, “We all have that in our lives. We have friends who have been friends, and have remained friends. It has never crossed over to anything else and has stayed true to that. But it doesn’t get reflected somehow.”
In the film, the three friends are shown to be so close to each other that they barge into each other’s room at any point in time. But they are also navigating through the challenges of their respective lives, whether be it Ahana’s boyfriend problems, Imaad’s Tinder addiction or Neil’s struggle in his career.
After the screening of Kho Gaye Hum Kahan, producer Ritesh Sidhwani noticed people highlighting the fact that the three remain friends throughout, without the tension of anything romantic building up ever. “Many people after the screening pointed out that three of them share an apartment and yet there is no love triangle there, and it is just pure friendship.”
Producer Ruchikaa Kapoor Sheikh concluded, “Platonic friendships exist. Ek ladka aur ladki dost ho sakte hain (A girl and a boy can just be friends).” She referred to the 1989 film Maine Pyar Kiya, starring Salman Khan and Bhagyashree, where Mohnish Bahl’s dialogue, “Ek Ladka aur ladka kabhi dost nahi hote” became quite popular.
Kho Gaye Hum Kahan is streaming on Netflix.
