The inheritance battle surrounding Karisma Kapoor’s ex-husband, Sunjay Kapur’s estimated Rs 30,000-crore estate, appears to be intensifying. On Friday, the Delhi High Court remarked that it did not want the proceedings in the case, filed by actor Karisma Kapoor’s children against their stepmother, Priya Sachdev Kapur, to become “melodramatic”, as per a report by Bar and Bench.
In response, Rajiv Nayar, appearing for Priya Kapur, disputed the allegation and maintained that all expenses raised by the children had been covered by Priya. He contended that the issues were being highlighted in court primarily to generate media attention. After hearing the exchange, Justice Jyoti Singh said she wished to avoid unnecessary theatrics. “I don’t want to spend more than 30 seconds on this. This question should not come to my court again. I don’t want this hearing to be melodramatic. I put this onus on you. This point should not come again,” she remarked. The Court said it would continue hearing the matter on November 19 and expressed its intention to conclude arguments on the interim injunction application expeditiously.
To those unaware, Karisma Kapoor and Sunjay Kapur were married for 13 years, from 2003 to 2016, and share two children. Sunjay later married Priya Sachdev Kapur, and passed away earlier this year. Following his death, an inheritance dispute surfaced involving his widow and his two children with Karisma. Represented by their mother as legal guardian, Samaira and Kiaan have approached the Delhi High Court alleging that Priya forged Sunjay’s will. They claim their father had “repeatedly assured” them of a rightful share, an assurance they say was absent from the will Priya presented at a family meeting on July 30.
Recently, Sunjay’s sister, Mandira Kapur Smith, spoke openly in an interview with journalist Vickey Lalwani, accusing Priya of contributing to the breakdown of Sunjay’s marriage with Karisma:“I had known about them (Priya and Sunjay) since they met on that flight, and I wasn’t happy about it. Lolo (Karisma) and Sanjay, my brother, were in a good place, actually. Kiaan was born. My brother was obsessed with his kids. I think for another woman to not care about a woman who’s just had a child is in bad taste. To come and disrupt a family is in bad taste. And I will leave it there. I think the world knows what I’m saying. You don’t break up a happy marriage. Not even a happy marriage, you don’t break up a marriage that is trying to work on keeping a family together. When you’ve got a child, you’ve just had another child, you step aside and say, ‘You know what?’ Or you encourage the man to go back and make it work. You don’t destroy a marriage. And Lolo did not deserve that. Lolo was also working very hard to make this marriage work. She did not deserve what came to her.”
