Kareena Kapoor highlights Shahid Kapoor and Imtiaz Ali’s roles in making Jab We Met an ‘iconic’ hit

Amid a recent dearth of options at the multiplexes, several old hits were re-released in theatres. One of them was the Kareena Kapoor and Shahid Kapoor-starrer romantic comedy Jab We Met, directed by Imtiaz Ali. In a new interview, Kareena spoke about the film, and why it remains an audience favourite even 15 years after its release in 2007.

In a new interview with Film Companion, Kareena said that the film’s success cannot be replicated, because it was such an organic hit in the first place. She said that nobody expected much from the film, and went into it with the purest of intentions.

Asked about Jab We Met ‘creating more buzz than many new releases’, Kareena said, “I don’t think Jab We Met can be recreated. Just its freshness, the innocence with which the film was made. Whether it was Imtiaz, or Shahid, or me, the idea was that, just the collaboration of everything and everybody’s energies at that time coming together. That’s what made it iconic… Nobody thought that we were going into this film to make the biggest hit or the greatest love story.”

Videos of fans thronging theatres to watch the film, and dancing to its songs, were widely shared on social media. Kareena said that she had seen the videos, and was very heartened by the response. In an earlier interview with Siddharth Kannan, Shahid was asked which actor from the younger generation could pull off his and Kareena’s roles in the film, and he said, “I cannot comment on my role, but for Geet (Kareena Kapoor’s character), I really doubt anybody else will be able to do that kind of justice.”

Jab We Met’s original release was also marred by the off-screen drama that was transpiring between Kareena and Shahid. The two broke up while working on the film. Kareena can currently be seen as the host of the chat show What Women Want, which recently returned with a fourth season.
