Director Karan Johar answered a question that has been on audiences minds after watching his film Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani. A romantic comedy-drama about two characters who decide to move in with each other’s families to test their compatibility, the film didn’t reveal if Rocky moved in with Rani’s folks at the end, or if Rani moved in with Rocky and his family.
Rani, played by Alia Bhatt, pushes back against the concept of women moving in with their husbands after marriage, calling the notion patriarchal. Rocky, played by Ranveer Singh, is too deeply conditioned to recognise how this could be unfair. And so, they agree to spend three months in each other’s houses to get a better idea of their families, because they know that in the Indian set-up, families tend to do the ‘backseat driving’ in relationships.
In an interview with Film Companion, not only did Karan offer an explanation for what happens to the characters after the credits roll, but also revealed that he has an idea for a sequel. “I definitely think that Rani would not move into the Randhawa Paradise. And I definitely think that the Chatterjees would be okay with the fact that they would move… I think they would move into a separate home, because now they get along with each other’s families well enough for them to create a world of their own. In my head, neither does Rocky move to Rani’s nor does Rani move into Rocky’s; they have a place of their own,” he said, adding, “But in my head, Rani would do that place up, she wouldn’t trust Rocky’s aesthetics.”
Karan continued, “You know, we discussed a part two. We used to chat about it; Alia, Ranveer and me. These two deserve a spinoff, and I was like, ‘Who knows?’ We imagined a story, we actually have a kind of a story… It’s too nascent a thought, but definitely I see Rocky and Rani living somewhere in Delhi, but away from their parents. Because now, even though they know the backseat driving is being done by the family, they’re okay, they’re at least in control of the front seat.”
Also starring Dharmendra, Shabana Azmi, Jaya Bachchan, Tota Roy Chowdhury and others, the film passed the Rs 50 crore mark in India on day four, and is expected to pass Rs 100 crore worldwide today.
