The Indian contingent at this year’s MET Gala in New York City came out in full force in the early hours of Tuesday. The brigade was led by Shah Rukh Khan, and included Diljit Dosanjh, Kiara Advani, and Priyanka Chopra. Also present at the grand event were designers Manish Malhotra and Sabyasachi Mukherjee. Filmmaker Karan Johar took to Instagram to give a shout-out to his friends from the film industry, although, curiously, he appeared to skip over Priyanka. She attended the gala with her husband, singer-actor Nick Jonas.
Karan shared videos and photos of Shah Rukh, Diljit, Kiara, and Manish on social media, praising their achievements and highlighting the powerful fashion statement that they made at the event. “ALLL HAIL the KING of the MET. The internet just broke into a gazillion hearts!!!!! @iamsrk …. bhai you RULE!” Karan wrote about Shah Rukh. For Kiara, Karan wrote, “Loot this beauty!!!!! So stunning KI!!!!! Mommy glow and fashion to bestow!! @anaitashroffadajania yet again owning it with GG!!! Love you @kiaraaliaadvani So gorg.” Sharing a picture of Diljit’s regal look, he wrote, “Fashion royalty! Always on point.”
Karan has worked with all four personalities in the past. His relationship with Shah Rukh goes back to the mid-90s, when he assisted Aditya Chopra on the film Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge. This is when he pitched Shah Rukh the idea for his directorial debut Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. They’d go on to collaborate on many more projects. Karan worked with Diljit on the film Good Newwz, and featured the song “Lover” in his latest directorial venture, Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahaani. Kiara, on the other hand, broke out with a leading role in a short film directed by Karan as part of the Lust Stories anthology for Netflix. She was also a part of Good Newwz, and has collaborated with Karan’s Dharma Productions several times.
Karan worked with Priyanka on the film Dostana, but they’ve faced speculation about their relationship for years. Priyanka has appeared on Karan’s talk show, Koffee with Karan, on several occasions as well. Their rumoured feud began in 2012, when Karan shot a string of tweets that were perceived as directed towards Priyanka. “Using their hired PR machinery and hiding behind so called ‘friends’ to get news into tabloids is nothing but spineless and lame,” he wrote. “Some people need to wake up and smell the KOFFEE!!! Get a reality check before it’s too late!!! Grow up!!! and don’t mess with goodness….,” he further added, making a reference to a tabloid article in which Priyanka’s friends made comments about Karan’s alleged mean behaviour towards her at a party.
More recently, Priyanka admitted that she felt cornered in Bollywood, and decided to leave and try her hand abroad after developing a ‘beef’ with certain people. On Dax Shepard’s podcast, Priyanka said, “I was being pushed into a corner in the industry (Bollywood). I had people not casting me, I had beef with people, I am not good at playing that game so I kind of was tired of the politics and I said I needed a break.”
