Actor Vikram Kapadia, who has appeared in web series like The Night Manager, Made in Heaven, Scam 1992 and films like Kapoor and Sons, Yodha, recently discussed the payment challenges faced by actors in the film industry. He specifically addressed two of the biggest production houses in Hindi cinema—Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions and Aditya Chopra’s Yash Raj Films and claimed that both studios often project a sense of superiority and tend to offer lower pay compared to other production companies, under the pretext of providing artists with opportunities.
In an interview with Bollyywood Now, he stated, “Yash Raj and Dharma have this ego that we are Yash Raj and Dharma so we will pay you a little less but you should be happy because we are paying you. I think they do that with everyone. I think that’s why actors are concerned. Yash Raj paid me well as a writer but hoga na kahi pe that hum Yash Raj hain. You are getting a role, they are giving you a break. So maybe the value is a little less but they never delay in payment.”
On Monday, Adar Poonawalla, the CEO of Serum Institute of India (SII), announced that his company, Serene Productions, would acquire a 50 percent stake in Dharma Productions.
Previously, in an interview with SCREEN, Karan Johar expressed concerns about the rising fees of actors is putting immense financial strain on producers. He had commented, “The entourage cost is the least of our worry. It’s the main remuneration of the actors that has to be looked into. It’s very critical for all the actors to understand exactly how the times are, how the climate of our movies are, how tough and difficult it is to maneuver through making a motion picture of any magnitude or size.”
Karan’s latest production, Jigra, has struggled to perform at the box office. In its first 12 days of release, the film has grossed only Rs 28.35 crore at the box office.
