Ekta Kapoor, along with actress Kareena Kapoor Khan and director Hansal Mehta, launched the trailer of their upcoming film The Buckingham Murders in Mumbai on Tuesday. Here, the producer and the director of the film reacted to the findings of the Justice Hema Committee Report and emphasised the need to focus on women’s safety in workplace.
Directing the question to Kareena, a media person asked how she and Ekta ensure women’s safety on their sets. While the actor chose to not answer the question, Ekta said that she takes the issue very seriously.
Ekta Kapoor, the owner of Balaji Telefilms and Balaji Motion Pictures, said, “Women and their safety is not just an industry issue. (It is) a workplace issue, and we take this very seriously.”
“A lot of women have to now lead so a lot of women can join forces,” the producer said as she stressed on the need to have women leadership in various fields to “equalise the agency” between men and women.
She added, “You have to change the agency from men to women and equalise the agency. (In) a lot of places, we need women at the top, at least running companies. For that women also have to make an initiative. Like I say, a report will come, we’ll read more about it..A conscious effort towards making a safe environment for women at any place of work, will come with women leading professional jobs. I think it has to start happening. It is still a very slanted place.”
Director Hansal Mehta, on the other hand, said that the onus of responsibility for the safety of women is on men. He said, “It is up to men. This responsibility is on the men. The onus is on the men to take the initiative to ensure that this equality and safety is maintained. I think it is about time we own up and we look at safety in the eye.”
