When Jaya Bachchan said Amitabh Bachchan’s eyes light up every time he sees daughter-in-law Aishwarya Rai: ‘For him, it’s like Shweta coming home’

Veteran actor Jaya Bachchan had candidly opened up about daughter-in-law Aishwarya Rai Bachchan back in the day. During an appearance on the talk show Koffee With Karan in 2007, the year when Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya tied the knot, Jaya opened up about her and Amitabh Bachchan’s relationship with their daughter-in-law. The Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham star spilled some beans about how she loved Aishwarya and Amitabh saw her as a surrogate for daughter Shweta.

Jaya said on the show, “Amitji, the minute he sees her (Aishwarya), it’s like he’s looking at Shweta coming home. His eyes light up. She’ll fill the vacuum that Shweta left. We have never been able to adjust that Shweta is not in the family, she is out and she is not a Bachchan. It’s tough (sic).”

Shweta Bachchan is Amitabh and Jaya’s eldest daughter. She tied the knot with Nikhil Nanda, a businessman in 1997. Nikhil is the son of Ritu Nanda, who is the daughter of the legendary Hindi film actor-producer Raj Kapoor. Together, Shweta and Nikhil have two children — Navya Naveli Nanda and Agastya Nanda.

Jaya had said that she loves Aishwarya adding, “She is lovely, I love her. She is such a big star herself and she has fitted in so well. She is a strong lady and she has a lot of dignity.”

The actor had also shared her approach to handling disagreements between herself and Aishwarya. Jaya revealed that she does not engage in “politics” behind Aishwarya’s back. In an interview with Rediff, Jaya had said, “She is my buddy. If I don’t like something about her, I tell it to her face. I don’t do politics behind her back. If she disagrees with me, she expresses herself. The only difference is that I can be a little more dramatic and she has to be more respectful.”

Abhishek and Aishwarya recently celebrated their 16th wedding anniversary. The couple has a daughter–Aaradhya Bachchan.
