Actor-politician Jaya Bachchan made her film debut in Mahanagar (1963), directed by the great Satyajit Ray. She subsequently went on to have a stellar career, having appeared in landmark hits across several decades. But she doesn’t seem to have a high opinion about more recent films. Her comments about Akshay Kumar’s 2017 film Toilet: Ek Prem Katha weren’t exactly complimentary.
Appearing at the India TV conclave, Jaya Bachchan admitted that she has reservations about watching a film like Toilet: Ek Prem Katha. “Just look at the title of the film; I would never go to watch a film with such a name. Yeh koi naam hai? Is that really a name?” she said.
The interviewer was referring to Bollywood films with narratives that somewhat align with government policies and campaigns. The actor called them ‘propaganda’ films and said that she does endorse them. “In today’s day and age, even political parties are making films, and to discuss all that, we need a lot of time,” added the actor.
Akshay Kumar’s Toilet: Ek Prem Katha was released in 2017 and highlighted the scarcity of proper toilets in the rural parts of the country. The film’s cast also included Bhumi Pednekar, Anupam Kher and Divyenndu. Toilet Ek Prem Katha was a box office success, making over Rs 300 crore worldwide. His 2018 film Pad Man talked about the lack of knowledge regarding menstruation. Jaya Bachchan was last seen in Sadabahar (2024), directed by Rajendra Gupta, while Akshay Kumar’s latest was Sky Force, which came out in January.
