Esha Deol, who is raising her two daughters as a single mother, was previously married to entrepreneur Bharat Takhtani. After being together for 12 years, the couple called it quits in 2024. When Bharat and Esha tied the knot in 2011, it was the most high profile wedding of the year as Esha’s parents – Hema Malini and Dharmendra – threw her a lavish wedding. However, Esha was in for a culture shock when she moved in with Bharat’s joint family, and found out that she was not allowed to wear shorts in the house.
In her book, titled Amma Mia, published in 2020, Esha recalled the changes that happened in her life after she married Bharat and moved into the Takhtani household. “When we got married in 2012, there were many things that changed,” she wrote, and added, “Of course, once I began living with his family, I couldn’t roam around the house in my shorts and ganjis like I used to.”
Even though Esha was not allowed to wear the clothes that she had been wearing for a large part of her life, she felt that his family was “wonderful” as they “took me into their fold effortlessly.” She also encountered another significant change in her life as she found that women of the Takhtani household were packing lunchboxes for their husbands. Esha, however, had “never cooked a single thing” before she met Bharat.
She described women of the Takhtani household as “queens of the kitchen” who were “packing delicious khane ka dabbas for their husbands.” Praising her mother-in-law, Esha said that she was “pampered” and Bharat’s mother “never insisted that I enter the kitchen or do any of the orthodox things she had been made to do as a bahu (daughter-in-law).”
She added that her mother-in-law made her feel like she was her “third son (after Bharat and his brother).” She further shared, “And since I was the first bahu in the house, I was pampered rotten. Someone was always sending me chocolate brownies and fruit and cream.”
The couple went their separate ways in 2024 and while is now a single mother, she recently shared that she doesn’t like to see herself as one. In a conversation with Mamaraazzi’s YouTube channel, Esha was asked about being a single mother and she said, “I don’t like to think of myself as a single mother because I don’t behave like one nor do I let the other person behave that way with me. It’s just that in life, sometimes, due to certain things, roles change. And if it doesn’t work out in a certain equation of what two people were at one point, you must take it upon you, especially when you have children, the two mature individuals must take it upon them to work out in another dynamic but keep the unit together for the sake of the children. And that’s exactly what Bharat and I do.”
Bharat is rumoured to be dating entrepeneur Meghna Lakhani Talreja after he shared a picture with her on his social media. His caption with the image read, “Welcome to my family” followed with a red heart emoji, suggesting that they were now a couple.
Esha and Bharat are parents to two daughters – Radhya and Miraya.
