There was no debate about Dharmendra-Shabana Azmi kiss scene, says Karan Johar: ‘Two great veterans, performing with…’

Reflecting upon the scene, Karan added how he wanted it to be “just a peck and nothing more than that.” Given his love for the song, ‘Abhi Na Jaao Chod Kar’, he was sure that it has to be the song that describes the love of Shabana and Dharmendra’s characters in the film.

While directing it, Karan thought, “Let’s go Manmohan Desai on this. He (Dharmendra) stands up and he sings for her (Shabana). He gets up from his wheelchair but you don’t notice. Even Ranveer looks at him and is like. ‘How has he walked up?’ He stands twice in the film from the wheelchair for Shabana ji.”

However, the director was questioned by his team about the logic of a wheelchair-bound Dharmendra getting up just to sing for Shabana. Karan explained, “My logic was love makes him walk. Love can move mountains, so it can make him walk also.” The filmmaker knew the scene lacked logic but decided to, “go with the beauty and romance of it.”

Earlier, Dharmendra had spoken about the scene during an interview with Network 18. He said he and Shabana understood that the scene was essential for the film and wasn’t contrived. There were no awkward moments between the two while shooting the scene, according to the veteran, who said it was because director Karan Johar shot it aesthetically.

Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, also starring Alia Bhatt, Ranveer Singh, and Jaya Bachchan, among others, has caught the attention of cinephiles. After a below average opening, the film has grown at the box office over the weekend. It has also had a good first Monday and is looking forward to an even better week ahead.
