Dangal actor Suhani Bhatnagar’s parents have shared details about the medical complications that led to her death at the age of 19. Best known for playing the child Babita Kumari Phogat in the blockbuster film, Suhani was diagnosed with a rare autoimmune disorder, and spent over 10 days at AIIMS before succumbing to her illness. Her parents addressed the media a day after her passing.
In a recent interaction with the media, according to India Today, Suhani’s parents said that she had been diagnosed with dermatomyositis. According to her father, this rare condition was identified around two months ago, when she started experiencing swelling in her hands. The swelling later spread to other parts of her body. He said that Suhani caught a minor infection in hospital, leading to fluid accumulation in her body, including in her lungs. Despite ventilation, her oxygen levels dropped significantly. Her immune system was impacted by the steroids that she was given. Suhani’s father said, “Even after putting her on a ventilator, her oxygen level was very low, and then yesterday evening at 7 pm, the AIIMS doctors said ‘she is not more.’”
Her mother said that Suhani wanted to return to acting after her graduation; she was studying journalism and mass communication. She said, “She was performing very well in college, she even topped in the last semester. She was brilliant in everything and wanted to excel in whatever she wanted to do. Our daughter has made us very proud.” Aamir Khan’s production house took to social media and mourned her passing. Suhani’s co-stars, including Zaira Wasim, director Nitesh Tiwari and producer Kiran Rao have also condoled her death.
“We are deeply saddened to hear about our Suhani passing away. Our heartfelt condolences to her mother Poojaji, and the entire family. Such a talented young girl, such a team player, Dangal would have been incomplete without Suhani. Suhani, you will always remain a star in our hearts. May you rest in peace,” Aamir Khan’s production house wrote on X.
