Randeep Hooda‘s acting and transformation in his latest release, Swatantrya Veer Savarkar, impressed his fans after the film’s release in cinemas on March 22. According to the industry tracking website Sacnilk, the film’s day one box office collection is roughly around Rs 1.15 crore.
According to the film’s production house Zee Studios, the film raked in Rs 1.10 crore nett in India and Rs 1.60 crore at the worldwide box office.
Also directed by Randeep, the biographical drama was released in Hindi all over India, and also in Marathi in Mumbai. It witnessed a 15.40 percent occupancy in Hindi with around 25.20 percent people catching the night shows. In Mumbai, the film is playing in around 300 shows, with day one occupancy standing at 19.25 percent. In Delhi and NCR, the occupancy was 11.25 percent from 256 shows. In Chennai, there were only four shows that played with 44.33 occupancy. The film’s Marathi shows witnessed a rare 100 percent occupancy.
The film will face tough competition from Kunal Kemmu’s directorial debut, the comedy caper Madgaon Express, which stars an ensemble cast consisting of Divyenndu, Pratik Gandhi, Avinash Tiwary, Nora Fatehi, Upendra Limaye and Chhaya Kadam. Both films will benefit from the long weekend with the festival of Holi around the corner. However, at the moment, both films stand neck-and-neck. Initial figures (on Sacnilk) suggest that Madgaon Express has earned Rs 1.5 crore on day one.
Swatantrya Veer Savarkar also stars Bigg Boss 17 fame Ankita Lokhande as Yamuna Bai. The film opened to mixed reviews. The Indian Express’ Shubhra Gupta gave the film a two-star rating and criticised the film’s narrative but appreciated Randeep’s acting. She wrote, “Randeep Hooda is propulsive in a reductive, one-sided narrative.”
“It appears Randeep Hooda’s intention was to right what he considers are historical wrongs towards his hero, and there’s not an iota of doubt of the near-worshipful tone the film bears towards the central character,” she added.
