Although Ananya Panday made her on-screen debut in director Punit Malhotra’s Student of the Year 2 (2019) — a film that received widespread criticism upon release — she has since been on a steady upward trajectory, continuously refining her skills with each new project. While her career has seen its share of significant flops, Ananya, the daughter of actor Chunky Panday and Bhavana Pandey, has also earned praise for her performances in films like Gehraiyaan (2022), Kho Gaye Hum Kahan (2023) and CTRL (2024), and the comedy series Call Me Bae (2024).
Though Bhavana is proud of Ananya’s growth and the actor she has become, she recently admitted that she wasn’t impressed by Ananya’s performance in Student of the Year 2. While acknowledging that her daughter gave her best effort, Bhavana noted that Ananya’s performance didn’t meet expectations in the film, produced by Nokia Studios and Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions.
“I think she did everything she could from her side. She gave her best effort. Of course, there are so many factors that matter in a film. Maybe in Student of the Year 2… she was too raw. So I wouldn’t say she didn’t try her best, but perhaps she wasn’t fully aware of what to do,” she said during a recent chat with Bollywood Bubble.
Despite this, Bhavana has shown herself to be one of Ananya’s biggest fans, revealing that she often re-watches one of her daughter’s projects. “I think she was amazing in the films Kho Gaye Hum Kahan and Call Me Bae. I absolutely loved her. I think she was very funny. I don’t want to sound like an obsessed fan, but I keep rewatching that series. Whenever I have nothing else to watch, I put it on because it’s just so funny. I really enjoyed her character in Call Me Bae,” she added.
Bhavana Pandey is currently basking in the success of the third season of her Netflix reality series Fabulous Lives of Bollywood Wives, in which she stars alongside Neelam Kothari, Maheep Kapoor and Seema Kiran Sajdeh. Meanwhile, Ananya is reportedly set to appear in the period drama Shankara, co-starring Akshay Kumar and R Madhavan, though the film has yet to be officially announced.
