Filmmaker Atlee, who is basking in the success of his latest directorial, the Shah Rukh Khan starrer Jawan, is all set for his next big film — Varun Dhawan‘s mass entertainer that is for now titled, VD18. The filmmaker is producing the film along with five other films.
In a chat with indianexpress.com, Atlee revealed he has decided just to produce the film and not direct it at the suggestion of Shah Rukh. He revealed that the actor has inspired him to not only make bigger films but also to produce them. He also shared how the film is shaping up.
Atlee said, “Shah Rukh sir inspired me, not just as an actor, but also as a producer. I have learnt the craft from spending four years with him. Now, I have started producing films here (Bollywood). I already produced a couple of films in the south, and now I have started producing all over — producing two in Tamil, two in Telugu, two in Hindi.”
The Varun Dhawan starrer will be helmed by Tamil director Kalees, known for his debut film Kee in 2019. Atlee shared that Varun’s film will be made on a big scale and will be a “mass film”. He said, “Regarding Varun’s film, it is going to be a mass film. Can expect the same calibration of mass to the theatre.”
Varun had earlier announced the film’s release date on social media. Taking to the Instagram story, he wrote, “#VD18 May 31st, 2024. In theatres.”
Meanwhile, Varun Dhawan’s Bawaal, directed by Nitest Tiwari released on Prime Video recently. He has finished work on his next, espionage action thriller, Citadel, alongside Samantha Ruth Prabhu. The series is directed by The Family Man director duo, Raj and DK.
Atlee’s Jawan is pacing towards Rs 500 crore mark in India. As per the production company, Red Chillies Entertainment, Jawan has earned Rs 735.02 crore worldwide and considering the pace at which the numbers are growing, it is expected to enter the Rs 1000 crore club in the coming week.
