In the vast sphere of Bollywood, there are many who fall through the cracks of the system. Some get back into the rotation, and some never make that return. Actor Arshad Warsi is definitely in the former category, considering his comeback in the OTT age of entertainment. In a recent interview, Arshad recalled the tough times he witnessed in his career and how his wife, Maria Goretti, supported him through it all.
While appearing on Raj Shamani’s podcast, Arshad was asked about his biggest fear. The actor replied that his biggest fear was not leaving behind enough for his family. He said, “My biggest fear would be suddenly passing away, and it’s not because I fear death. It’s because I fear not leaving enough behind for my family. As much as I have done for them, I still think that if something happens to me tomorrow, what will they do? Unless I see it with my eyes, that they are sorted and they are secure, I will have that fear, and I think that is how every parent feels.”
He added, “I think it bothers me more because I have gone through so much. Even after a big film, I have gone without work for years. I was just existing, staring at walls, cooking for my wife and kids. I was a strong guy, and I have seen very tough times. But I have built a comfortable life for my children, and they aren’t as strong as me.”
Arshad then talked about how his wife Maria Gorettoi often disagrees with him regarding how much privilege their kids should have while growing up. He shared that Maria wants their kids, Zeke and Zene, to earn everything they get, including first-class tickets for whenever they are travelling. However, Arshad admitted that he doesn’t completely agree with that.
“Maria and I fight a lot about what our kids should get and what they deserve. For example, whenever we are travelling, I tell her that I am booking first-class tickets for them as well, and she’ll say, ‘Why? Do they deserve to be in first class?’ She’s right, and they should earn all of it; they need to learn the value of money. I listen to her, and I agree with it, but then I ask her, ‘What will they learn in this 6-hour flight if they are living in a bungalow and driving around in a Mercedes?’ If you wish to teach them, then everything else needs to be taken away as well,” said Arshad.
Despite their disagreements, Arshad said that his wife is his biggest support system. He recalled going through a very lean period in his career and lauded his wife for the way she took care of the family. He said, “I have a huge amount of respect for the kind of person Maria is and the way she keeps the family together. It is because of her that I can take a lot of chances, because I know there is a strong woman behind me. If tomorrow I stop getting roles, that bright woman will take care of it. I remember the time when I didn’t work for 3-4 years; I felt no shame in the fact that my wife was earning and taking care of the family.”
Arshad and Maria tied the knot in 1999. He was last seen in Jolly LLB 3 and OTT film Bhagwat Chapter 1 Raakshas.
