AR Rahman and his wife of 29 years, Saira Banu, announced their divorce on Tuesday with a statement via Saira’a lawyer, Vandana Shah. In a recent interview, the lawyer opened up about the details of their divorce settlement, and what led to the separation. Vandana was also asked if there was any connection between their divorce and the divorce of Rahman’s bassist, Mohini Dey, as the two announcements came within hours of each other.
In a chat with Republic TV, Vandana categorically denied any link between the two divorce announcements, and said, “Not at all. There is no link between the two. Saira and Mr Rahman have taken this decision on their own. There is no link between the two news at all.” When asked if Rahman and Saira had reached any financial settlement in their divorce, Vandana said that they were yet to reach that stage, but assured that this would be an “amicable” split.
Talking about the statement that alluded to “pain and agony” in their relationship, Vandana said, that divorce was a “painful decision” for them both. She added, “When a marriage ends, it is a painful decision. No one is happy when a marriage ends. Divorce is not an occasion to be celebrated. Saira has been through her ups and downs in this marriage.”
She said that she is not at liberty to discuss the real reason behind their divorce. “He has been a protective husband. She has been a good wife. I don’t have to speculate. I know the real reason but I’m not at liberty to discuss that,” she said, and added, “They are both committed to building better lives with or without each other.”
Vandana was also asked about their appearance at the Ambani wedding in July, where Rahman and Saira posed together on the red carpet. She was asked whether the two put up with each other for the sake of appearances. “I don’t think both of them are people like that. In fact, both of them are extremely genuine. It was not what you would call a marriage sham,” she said. Vandana was also asked if Saira was feeling upset about Rahman using the hashtag “#arsairabreakup” in his divorce announcement, but she just said, “No comments.”
Vandana insisted that both Rahman and Saira were “dignified” people. She continued, “It’s been a long marriage and every marriage goes through its ups and downs and I am extremely happy that if it has come to an end, it has come to an end in such a dignified manner and we have put out a joint press release and I think it speaks volumes for both of them that they both are extremely dignified people and as everyone knowns, both of them have been very private and personal about their personal lives. I can just say that both of them wish well for each other and they both will continue to support each other.”
Their divorce announcement read, “The statement read, “On behalf and instruction of Mrs. Saira and her husband renowned musician Allahrakka Rahman (A.R. Rahman), Vandana Shah and Associates issue the following statement regarding the couple’s decision to part ways. After many years of marriage, Mrs. Saira and her husband Mr. A R. Rahman have made the difficult decision to separate from each other. This decision comes after significant emotional strain in their relationship. Despite their deep love for each other, the couple has found that the tensions and difficulties have created an insurmountable gap between them, one that neither party feels able to bridge at this time. Mrs. Saira and her husband Mr. A R. Rahman emphasize that they have taken this decision out of pain and agony. Mrs. Saira and her husband Mr. A R. Rahman request privacy and understanding from the public during this challenging time, as they navigate this difficult chapter in their life.”
