Anurag Kashyap took to Twitter to show support to his director friend Karan Johar. “The World must learn from us.. We solve all our problems by blaming it on movies and banning it,” he said. Trouble started when earlier this morning, he directly targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi and sought an apology from him, saying, “You haven’t yet said sorry for your trip to meet the Pakistani PM. It was dec 25th. Same time KJo was shooting ADHM? Why?” This was not the first time the director mentioned the Prime Minister in tweets. When his film Udta Punjab was facing problems with the CBFC, he directly approached Narendra Modi on Twitter to help him out.

Anurag Kashyap and CBFC have always had a hate-hate relationship irrespective of the government at the centre, recently it was over Udta Punjab. The film was based on the drug problem in Punjab. The Punjab government felt the film was a move to defame the state and its government. The Bollywood fraternity had united back then to fight against Pahlaj Nihalani-led censor board.
In 2004, his film Black Friday which was partially based on the book ‘Black Friday – The True Story of the Bombay Bomb Blasts’ by S Hussain Zaidi was considered too dark to be released in India. Back then, since the judgement of the 1993 Bombay blasts case was not out, the movie faced a stay order from the Bombay High Court.
Anurag Kashyap’s Paanch was another film which faced a lot of heat from the censor board and was banned due to ‘violence, crass language and drug abuse’. The thriller was reportedly based on Joshi-Abhyankar serial murders in 1997.
Deepa Mehta’s water was another such film which landed into trouble. Anurag Kashyap was one of the scriptwriters of the film. The movie was set in Varanasi and focused on misogyny and banishment.
