Singer Amar Singh Chamkila’s son from his second marriage, Jaiman Chamkila, says he’s in touch with his father’s first family. The Punjabi singer was married to Gurmail Kaur, before he fell in love with Amarjot, who also became his singing partner. In the new Imtiaz Ali film, they’re played by actors Diljit Dosanjh and Parineeti Chopra.
With Gurmail Kaur, Amar Singh Chamkila had two daughters. In a 2023 interview with Cine Punjabi, Jaiman opened up about his father’s first family and said he was in touch with them. Chamkila, along with his wife Amarjot, were a musical sensation in Punjab of the ’80s. Known for singing raunchy songs with double entendre lyrics, they were shot dead in 1988.
“I am in touch with Chamkila’s first family. I have two sisters from his first wife, Amandeep and Kamaldeep. The older one is married and has two kids… When I go meet her (his stepmother), she greets me well but that’s it. From the beginning, it’s been this way. It is not her fault nor our (the children) fault,” he was quoted as saying.
Chamkila’s son also spoke about how the family often talks about losing the singer, who found himself dealing with threats from various extremist groups and rival singers when he was at the peak of his career, selling the most number of records in Punjab at one point. He was aged 27 when he was killed by unknown assailants.
“Sometimes we speak and she would say that if your father was around, we wouldn’t be in such state. He worked really hard, people’s evil eyes impacted him, he had too many enemies. I have my sisters as well, we try to share our pain as much as we can,” he said.
Imtiaz Ali’s Amar Singh Chamkila has brought back the spotlight on the singer, dubbed as the ‘Elvis of Punjab’. With the new Netflix film, Chamkila’s life and songs are back in public discourse. Chamkila and Amarjot’s murder remains unsolved.
Chamkila was among the most popular musicians of the state, but he also found himself at the centre of controversies, and spent the majority of his career dealing with threats from various religious extremists, who weren’t happy with his tracks.
