Prabhas and Kriti Sanon‘s epic drama Adipurush is now available to watch on multiple OTT platforms. While the Hindi version of the poorly received film, directed by Om Raut, is available on Netflix, the film’s Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada versions are streaming on Amazon Prime Video. Previously, the sports drama 83 debuted on Netflix and Disney+ Hotstar simultaneously, while Kantara is available to stream on both Netflix and Prime Video.
Netflix, on Friday morning, took to social media to announce the film’s arrival on the service, as did Prime Video.
Adipurush — a multi-lingual big-screen adaptation of the Ramayana — was released in theatres on June 23 and was almost instantly caught in controversy as it received backlash for its controversial dialogues and for allegedly “distorting and disrespecting” the epic. The producers were forced to alter the controversial lines of dialogue following the backlash.
Billed as one of the biggest films of the year, Adipurush had a tough run at the box office, and managed to earn a total of Rs 286.37 crore from all languages. The movie reportedly earned Rs 390 crore worldwide, which wasn’t enough to recover its whopping reported budget of Rs 500 crore.
The film suffered not only because it was caught in controversy, but it also opened to negative reviews by film critics. The Indian Express’ Shubhra Gupta, in her review of the film, wrote, “This version of the Ramayan is not interested in connecting with the feeling of genuine religiosity that any reading of the ‘granth’ arouses, whether it is the most popular Tulsidas version or the Valmiki version.”
