Abhishek Bachchan, who is currently promoting his latest film Ghoomer, has been an entrepreneur for a few years now and in a recent interview, the actor opened up about his kabaddi team and said that investing in the sport was like a “shot in the dark.” But it eventually worked for him as he said that the company is currently valued at “100s of crores.”
In a chat with Raj Shamani on his podcast, Bachchan said that he has “no business acumen” and added that all his “business decisions have been counter intuitive to whatever I was taught business should be like.” Speaking about his kabaddi team Jaipur Pink Panthers with Bunty Walia, Bachchan said, “We didn’t know anything, how to make a team, maintain a team, what is the running cost, nothing. It was literally like a shot in the dark,” he recalled. The team played its first season in 2014 at the Pro Kabaddi League.
“I believed people will want to watch this. It’s just an instinct that you have. I felt that this could work,” he said when asked about his decision to buy a team. Bachchan then spoke about the massive returns that have come in from his investment. “Something that started on a shoestring budget, today, is valued in 100s of crores. It’s fantastic,” he said.
When asked about the multiple he made on the team, he said, “I never count my multiples until I actually offload anything” but eventually said “it is more than 100x right now.” Bachchan said that this result has come over a period of 10 years.
Bachchan is currently celebrating the release of his latest film Ghoomer. Directed by R Balki, the film also stars Saiyami Kher, Shabana Azmi and Angad Bedi. The Indian Express’ Shubhra Gupta gave the film 2.5 stars and wrote, “Abhishek Bachchan reminds you in bits of his illustrious father (Amitabh Bachchan appears in a cameo here) especially when he is delivering a sozzled monologue, but remains a trope.”
