Although the internet and social media had not yet reached every corner of the country, global icon Aishwarya Rai and actor Abhishek Bachchan’s wedding in 2007 was the talk of the town of that era; almost like a viral moment before the word “viral” entered our daily vocabulary. Now, about two decades later, they remain one of the most celebrated couples in Indian cinema, with both their joint and separate public appearances making big headlines.
Recently, fashion designer duo Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla, who designed multiple outfits for Abhishek during his wedding, took a trip down memory lane, recalling the majestic event. They also recalled Shweta Bachchan’s wedding and shared, “It (our collaboration) started with Shweta Bachchan’s wedding. We came up with a very interesting and wonderful concept: her lehenga would be maroon instead of red, and it would be full of zardozi. Then we thought, why not do the entire mandap in zardozi? It was magical,” Abu shared during an appearance on The Namrata Zakaria Show. Sandeep added that Shweta entered the venue like a Bengali bride, with her brother carrying her on his shoulders.
Opening up about Aishwarya and Abhishek’s wedding, they said, “He had some of the best jewellery that there was. He wore some phenomenal pieces, which Abu and I sourced. It was the first time someone wore a Mughal tumbler bead necklace. There were ruby buttons on Abhishek’s sherwani. Mr Bachchan (Amitabh) also loves dressing up and his little jewellery bits. They all do, actually. Since they wear clothes beautifully, we get inspired to do even better.” Abu and Sandeep also mentioned that if the family, particularly Jaya, builds trust in someone, it’s almost impossible to shatter it. “The trust is implicit.”
Mentioning that the entire Bachchan family is humble, Sandeep said, “The wonderful thing about them is, be it Amitabh and Jaya or Navya and Agastya Nanda, they are well-mannered to another level. They’re very polite and always correct. They are very refined.” The duo mentioned that even Amitabh’s mother, social activist Teji Bachchan, was a delight to share time with.
