Actor Aamir Khan’s daughter, Ira Khan, had opened up about her battle with depression a few years ago via a series of social media posts. Ira was diagnosed with clinical depression over five years ago. She has now opened up about the support she received from her father Aamir, and said that her family has a history of mental health issues.
Ira recently launched the Agastu foundation with an attempt at providing mental health support. In an interview with The Times of India, Ira said that Aamir and her mother Reena Dutta are on the advisory board of the foundation, and added that he helped in setting it up until she got the right funding.
When asked about her experience, Ira said that she noticed changes in her behavior, such as long bouts of crying, feeling sad, and on one occasion, not eating for four days. She realised something was wrong. Although Aamir’s divorce from Reena Dutta was amicable and didn’t affect her much, she still sensed that something was off and decided to come back to India from the Netherlands, where she was studying. She said, “My mom pointed out that I didn’t want to be alive so I would just sleep my day away so that I would have fewer hours to live in a day.”
Talking about her journey, Ira said that she is still on medication and added that sometimes she has anxious phases. She added, “Every 8-10 months I will have a big crash. It’s partly genetic, partly psychological, and partly social. It took me a while to figure it out. But I have mental health disorders in my family. I also did not make healthy choices and I systematically walked into depression.”
Ira is Aamir’s second child from his first wife, Reena. Recently, Ira got engaged to Nupur Shikhare.
