From Rajveer Singh in Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak, Raja Prasad in Dil, Munna in Rangeela and Rohit Kumar in Akele Hum Akele Tum to Dev Karan Singh in Mann, Rehan Qadri in Fanaa and Laal Singh Chaddha in the 2022 film of the same name, Aamir Khan has brilliantly portrayed various shades of love, fully immersing himself in these roles as Bollywood’s “Mr Perfectionist”. Although many perceive Aamir as a serious person who might not have a light-hearted side, the actor insists that, much like his on-screen characters, he is a romantic at heart in real life.
“Actually main bahut romantic aadmi hu. Ma kasam, main bahut romantic hu. Bahut funny lagta hai bolte hue par aap meri dono biwiyon se poochh sakte hain ye baat. Sach bol raha hu main. Because main hu uss type ka (Actually, I am a very romantic man. I swear on my mother, I am very romantic. It sounds very funny saying it, but you can ask both my wives about this. I am telling the truth. Because that’s the kind of person I am). I’m a very mushy romantic person,” the Bollywood superstar shared at the trailer launch event of his son Junaid Khan’s upcoming film Loveyapa.
Aamir Khan tied the knot with Reena Dutta in 1986 and they have two children together: Junaid (born 1993) and a daughter Ira (born 1997). Reportedly, Reena — Aamir’s neighbour at the time — initially declined his proposal. However, they began dating in the early ’80s and Reena even made a brief appearance in a song in Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak. After 16 years together, they parted ways in 2002 and eventually divorced.
Later, Aamir met Kiran Rao on the sets of Lagaan, where she was an assistant to director Ashutosh Gowariker. They began dating and married in 2005 after four years together. In 2011, they welcomed their son, Azad Rao Khan, through surrogacy. After 16 years of marriage, Aamir and Kiran announced their separation in July 2021.
Despite the divorces, Aamir Khan maintains a warm and close relationship with both Reena Dutta and Kiran Rao, who also share a strong bond with each other, almost like a tightly knit family. Kiran herself once shared that even after Reena and Aamir’s divorce, Reena remained an integral part of the Khan family.
“Reena never left the family. It was very much the same when Aamir and Reena got divorced. The family was highly protective of Reena and when I got married, Reena was a part of the family and we became really good friends because she is an incredible human being. I absolutely love her, she’s a dear friend,” she shared during a chat with Zoom last year. Even during the wedding festivities of Aamir and Reena’s daughter Ira, Kiran was present throughout and the three of them were often seen sharing joyful moments together.
