Tamannaah Bhatia will be next seen in an unusual avatar, as Shiva Shakthi in Ashok Teja’s Telugu supernatural thriller Odela 2. Fans have been intrigued by her look as the deglamourized yet intense character. However, at a recent promotional event, the director was asked why he cast Tamannaah in the role, given her dominant image as a “milky beauty.”
A female reporter asked Ashok Teja, “Why did you look at a ‘milky beauty’ and think that she could be a Shiva Shakti?,” much to the annoyance of Tamannaah. The actor responded to the reporter gracefully: “Your question has the answer in it. He doesn’t look at ‘Milky Beauty’ as something that is to be shamed or feel bad about. Glamour, in a woman, is to be celebrated. And we women must celebrate ourselves. Then we can expect other people to celebrate us. If we look at us in a certain way then nobody can respect us. Here, we have a wonderful gentleman who doesn’t look at women like that. He looks at women like divine. And divine can be glamorous, lethal, and powerful. A woman can be many-many things.”
Tamannaah’s reputation as “the milky beauty” has also gained traction thanks to her various popular special songs, which are loosely called ‘item numbers’. In fact, after grabbing eyeballs with her track Kavaalaa in Rajinikanth-starrer 2023 Tamil film Jailer, she mulled hard over whether she wants to follow that up with another dance song, Aaj Ki Raat, in Amar Kaushik’s 2024 blockbuster horror comedy Stree 2. She said in an edition of SCREEN LIVE, “It took me a minute to figure out whether I want to do Aaaj Ki Raat or not because I just had a song that came out.” “I could not have imagined that this would be the most amazing thing to ever happen to me. I thought it would be like just a song that people would like. Nobody can imagine how much. So, I think I am blessed to get so much love from you guys,” she added.
She also confessed that she could have done a better job of Kavaalaa. “To be honest, I really felt that I hadn’t given Kaavaalaa my best. I felt like I could have done something better. When Aaj Ki Raat came along, Amar explained the whole story to me and said that I have to play and dance like Shama. He said, ‘You are playing a character, this is not going to be just another song.’ That gave me a little bit of food for thought, because I was like, ‘Yes, I can play this differently,” said Tamannaah.
Odela 2 is the sequel to Ashok Teja’s 2022 film Odela Railway Station. While the first part starred Hebah Patel, Vasishta N Simha, and Pujita Ponnada, Tamannaah plays the central role in the sequel. Hebah and Vasishta reprise their roles from the first part. Produced by Madhu Creations and Samapth Nandi Teamworks, it’s slated to release in cinemas on April 17.
