It is an understatement to say that ace director Shankar has faced several ups and downs over the past few years. In many ways, filmmakers like SS Rajamouli and Atlee have become the go-to names for grandeur, masala entertainment, and visual spectacles. So much so that there are people who might not even realise that the Shankar brand of cinema made waves not just in Tamil Nadu, but all across the nation. This was best elucidated by Rajamouli himself, who was the special guest at the trailer launch of Ram Charan’s Game Changer, helmed by Shankar. The RRR filmmaker said, “I don’t see Game Changer as Shankar garu’s debut in Telugu because for many of us, he is not a Tamil director but a Telugu director.”
Rajamouli stated that the Telugu cinema audience and Telugu filmmakers, past and present, have immense respect on Shankar. “Dil Raju did this film with you because of that respect and pride,” said Rajamouli, adding that today’s filmmakers are definitely doing a lot of big-budget films that are made with hundreds of crores, and are released all across the country. “For many filmmakers, who are now trying their wares in cinema, might see a lot of us doing these things. But for us, he is the OG… the original gangster, the director of big-screen entertainment. He is the inspiration for a lot of us filmmakers, who were only assistant directors then.”

Heaping lavish praise on the Sivaji director, SS Rajamouli added, “He gave us the confidence that we can scale up our vision, and if we convincingly bring it on screen, the audience would turn up in droves to watch our films. He gave us that confidence.” Talking about the trailer of Game Changer, Rajamouli reminisced how he saw the ‘vintage Shankar garu’ in the film, and gave an example of the emotionally charged scene from Oke Okkadu (Mudhalvan) where Arjun decides to take the political plunge. “I remember that shot so vividly. Even thinking of it, I am getting emotional right now, and I could feel the same emotion in the Game Changer photo featuring Ram Charan.”
Rajamouli also spoke about the evolution of his Magadheera and RRR hero Ram Charan. “I am very happy for my brother. I could see a sea of difference in the Ram Charan of Magadheera and the Ram Charan of RRR. I’m happy how he has come up in his career, and has learnt to hit the emotional chords and the mass moments.”
