Samantha Ruth Prabhu is now known across the country, but there was a time when she and other actors from the south weren’t treated with respect. In an interview, Samantha proudly noted how far the regional language industries have come in recent years, with several Tamil, Telugu and Kannada films outperforming major Hindi movies.

For the longest time, Hindi cinema was considered to be at the top of the Indian film pyramid. But in the last half decade or so, films such as RRR, KGF: Chapter 2, Pushpa: The Rise, Kantara and more have changed that narrative at the box office, while Malayalam films have upped the bar from a quality perspective on streaming. Samantha acknowledged this progress in an interview with Gulte.

She said, “It’s absolutely wonderful. There were times when we south actors couldn’t source garments from designers because they were like, ‘Who are you? South actor? What south?'” She added with a smile, “We’ve come a long way from there, haven’t we? This inclusivity is quite amazing, and we’re now finally where we should be.”

Samantha said that her career has been marred by several ups and downs, and she’s glad that she made the decision early on to be an ‘open book’. This prepared her for the worst, which peaked last year when she was diagnosed with an autoimmune condition, while she was dealing with her separation from ex-husband Naga Chaitanya.

Samantha rose to nationwide fame after appearing in a special dance number in Pushpa. She also delivered an acclaimed performance in the second season of Prime Video’s The Family Man. Now, she’ll star in the big budget historical drama Shaakuntalam, and after that, she’ll be seen in the romantic film Kushi, and then in the Indian spinoff of Prime Video’s Citadel.
